Learning and Growing Together in Grades 1β5
Grade school at Balay Sofia is a time of transition, where children shift from early childhood play into deeper academic learning and personal growth. Our broad, balanced curriculum includes mythology, math, world languages, geography, and environmental studies, along with hands-on subjects like art, music, cooking, gardening, woodworking, sewing, and sining bayan. Recognizing that children learn in diverse ways, we use a variety of teaching methods to support all learners including those who have different learning styles so each child can connect with the material in their own way.
Imagination is at the heart of our approach. Subjects come alive through stories, songs, drawings, and projects that help students experience and internalize what they learn. Each day begins with a two-hour βMain Lesson,β focusing deeply on one subject for several weeks. Students explore topics through writing, drawing, discussion, and hands-on work, creating personal lesson books that reflect their understanding. Daily classes in language, music, movement, and handwork round out the day.
Learning is active and embodied. Children might use clapping games to grasp math concepts, linking physical movement with intellectual growth and creativity.
Our multicultural curriculum honors diverse stories and traditions, helping students see their place in the wider world. Seasonal festivals and cultural studies build empathy and respect.
As students grow, so does their curiosity and capacity for complex thinking. Around age 10, they begin exploring bigger ideas with more depth and creativity, continuing to make meaningful connections between the past and present, the world and themselves.
